Preserving and protecting the Green Belt within our parish.
We’re a voluntary society of North Mymms residents, founded in 1971, run by a small committee of volunteers — and backed by over 900 members who want their countryside kept open.
Why Green Belt policy matters here
Checks urban sprawl
Keeps North Mymms’ villages distinct from Greater London and neighbouring towns, rather than merging into one continuous suburb.
Protects the countryside
Safeguards open land from encroachment, preserving habitats, farmland and the views residents value.
Preserves village character
Protects the historic, low-density character of Bell Bar, Brookmans Park, Little Heath, North Mymms, Swanley Bar, Water End, Welham Green and parts of Bullens Green from piecemeal development.
How we’re run
A small committee of volunteers
A small committee of local resident volunteers meets regularly throughout the year. They review every planning application submitted to Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, object where Green Belt principles are threatened, and represent members at council meetings and planning appeals. We work alongside allied groups, including CPRE and the London Green Belt Council, to strengthen our voice.

A green belt, nearly a century in the making

1938
The Green Belt Act proposes a protective green ribbon around London.
1955
Green Belt policy is codified and extended nationally, beyond London.
1971
North Mymms District Green Belt Society is founded by local residents.
2014–15
The Society helps defeat the proposed New Barnfield waste incinerator.
Today
Over 900 members strong, still scrutinising every application that threatens our Green Belt.
